Oranges originated in Southeast Asia. Portuguese, Spanish, and Dutch sailors planted citrus trees along trade routes to prevent scurvy. Christopher Columbus brought in 1493 the seeds of oranges to Haiti and the Caribbean, and they were introduced in Florida in 1513 by Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon. Oranges contain thiamin, vitamins B6 and C, iron and calcium.
